Lawrence resides in Lumsden NZ, and has been a member of the band since 2011 when the band travelled to Crete. He has been the band’s Pipe Sergeant for many years and is responsible for tuning the pipe corp. Lawrence began learning the pipes in 1967 under the tutelage of the late Bruce Milne and played in the City of Invercargill Caledonian Pipe Band for many years, during which there were many highlights. There was the South Pacific Contest in 1980 and winning the New Zealand Pipe Championship in the same year. The band also travelled to Los Angeles and to Disneyland. Lawrence played his pipes on the HMS Queen Mary.
Lawrence was a foundation member of the Pipes and Drums Otago Southland 4th Battalion Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment and remained a member for 29 years until it was disbanded in 1976. Lawrence is a stalwart member of the Waimatuku Highland Pipe Band and was Pipe Major for 10 years.
