Maurice learned to play the bagpipe when he was 12 years old. He began his pipe band career in the John McGlashan College Pipe Band and continued as a piper in the Otautau Pipe Band. He joined the City of Invercargill Highland Pipe Band as Drum Major in 2002 and was also Drum Major of the Waimatuku Highland Pipe Band after 2019.
